England star Bentley, 23, admits he lost money on horses, dogs, online poker and even American sports before his girlfriend finally helped him to beat his problem three years ago. But Blackburn midfielder Bentley's confession shows that gambling is a major problem within football after he became the latest big-name player to confess his addiction.

Bentley, speaking on Setanta Sports' Football Matters show, said: "In our business football, you hear tips all the time. "It is so easy, I could have 50 to 100 bets a day no problem. I was betting on anything. "It starts off from pounds, then it's a hundred, then it's thousands. It's never about the money. You start off wanting to win £100 and then it's £100,000. "It was when I started earning money that I started to get really heavily into it. I was addicted to betting on everything. I would wake up and the first thing I would think about would be to have a bet rather than play football. All I wanted was to have a bet. "It started out as a day at the races and it got out of hand. My girlfriend said I had to stop. It was the hardest thing ever."
