An Irishman who hadn't stepped inside a bingo hall for over 30 years has just landed £74,000 when his numbers came in.

Dublin born entrepreneur James Sheridan scooped the massive prize at the Mecca Bingo hall in Dagenham and afterwards admitted he had been coaxed into playing on a one off occasion by friends.

The 63-year-old - who moved to east London from his hometown in Dublin's Ballyfermot aged 13 - explained:

"I'm not a bingo player at all. The last time I was in one of those halls was 30 years ago.

"That night I dropped a friend to the hall and she coaxed me in for a game but she played my books for me as I didn't even have my glasses."

Jimmy plans to give his bingo partner a little treat with his winnings and also says he'll spend some of the money on his grandchildren James who's 1 and Marney who's 11.

The avid hurling supporter, who is vice-chair of the Tomas McCurtain's GAA Club based in Goodmayes, says there are some things money can't buy. "Ideally I would like to ensure McCurtain's win the hurling and football championships this year -- but short of bribing a referee I can't see how the money can really help that," he joked. But one indulgence he has already taken with his newly-won cash is another gamble on "a dead cert".

He said: "I have put £1,000 of the money on County Kilkenny winning the All-Ireland Championship five times in a row -- I truly believe they can do it and at 9-1 odds that's a good bet. Maybe I'll be lucky again."
