PREMIERSHIP FOOTBALL

In recent weeks Alex Ferguson's Manchester United have been in sensational form.

Only an injury time William Gallas strimark hughes.jpgke denied the red devils three points last weekend at Arsenal.

It would have been United's 9th win on the trot in the Premiership.

However on Sunday they will come up against the team managed by one of their former heroes Mark Hughes.

Blackburn Rovers sit 6th in the Premiership table just five points behing the reigning Champions with a  game in hand.

They themselves have gone six games unbeaten in the Premier league and last weekend held Liverpool to a scoreless draw at Ewood Park.

So can Sparky inspire his players to register a shock win at Old Trafford?

With the exception of a suprise defeat to Manchester City early in the Premiership season and defeat to Coventry City in the Carling Cup the red devils have waltzed their way through the 2007/8 season with awesome power.

That loss to Coventry won't have kept Fergie awake at night though at the time he did lash his young side for throwing in the towel too early.

In truth, European football's longest serving top flight manager will be delighted with how his side have performed since August.

After a stuttering start where United escaped against the likes of Everton, Tottenham, Sunderland and Birmingham City with narrow 1-0 wins the Premiership Champions moved up through the gears and in recent weeks have been scoring for fun.

Last weekend they picked up a credible point away to Arsenal and during the week booked their place in the next round of the Champion's League with a facile 4-0 win over Dynamo Kiev.

Blackburn Rovers though will provide a much stiffer test for United than the Ukrainians.

Between them strikers Bennie McCarthy and Roque Santa Cruz have scored nine Premiership goals and they go into this clash on the back of an exceptionally strong run of results away from home.

They won their last two Premiership away games by 2-1 against Sunderland and Tottenham.

And last week they came away from Fratton Park with an excellent 2-1 win at the hands of high flying Portsmouth in the Carling Cup.

Rovers defeated Man United by 2-1 at Old Trafford on the season before last. Since this seems to be their favoured score line this season could they repeat the smash and grab?

To do so they must keep the likes of Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez in check, a task few have managed so far this season.
