FA CUP

O NEILL FERGIE.jpg

His credentials as a gifted football manager have never been in doubt but so far this season Aston Villa manager Martin O' Neill has surpassed even his own expectations.

In the Premiership the live-wire Irishman has guided Villa to victories over the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, West Ham and Blackburn Rovers and currently the Villans sit seventh in the table just three points off a Champions League spot.

Villa are unbeaten in their last five games and on Saturday welcome Manchester United to the midlands in a mouth watering FA Cup 3rd round tie.

Though Martin O' Neill is confident his side can cause an upset and defeat the Premier League Champions history indicates thats unlikely to happen.

Amazingly Villa have failed to defeat the Red Devils in 20 league and cup matches with the last win coming in a 3-0 triumph in the third round of the Worthington Cup in October 1999.

Aston Villa versus Manchester United is just one of four all Premiership clashes fixed for this weekend.

At White Hart Lane supporters of both Tottenham and Reading will be expecting more fireworks after the sides served up a Christmas feast last week with the home side eventually running out 6-4 victors.

Dimitar Berbatov (pictured left) hit four that day and the striker has now been valued at more than £30 million by his manager Juande Ramos.

At Upton Park in form West Ham United face a tricky tie against Premiership fouth placed side Manchester City.

In 2006 when the Hammers eventually reached the FA Cup final against Liverpool they defeated City 2-1 along the way and will be expecting more of the same in East London.

Premiership strugglers Sunderland and Wigan go head to head at the Stadium of light with the latter still on a high after a wonderful 1-1 draw at Anfield midweek.

Both Roy Keane and Steve Bruce may be more worried about top flight survival but still are expected to give their all in the world's oldest football competition.

Luton Town almost caused one of the biggest upsets in recent FA Cup history when they led Liverpool 3-1 at half time in a 3rd round tie in 2006.

The Pool went on to win that tie 5-3 and eventaully the cup out-right with victory over West Ham United in that memorable cup final.

And at the Britannia Stadium Stoke City who are fourth in the Championship will be hoping to inflict more turmoil on under-fire Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce by dumping the Magpies out of the cup at the first hurdle.
