The Price Is Right History
The Price Is Right started appearing on the NBC - the US television network way back in 1956. It is the longest-running game show in history and is still going strong. From the 1972 it became the mainstream TV gameshow. It took over ten years for the show to come to the UK screens in the 1984. The show is still being aired on the ITV channel.
The game starts with four people picked at random from the audience are invited to COME ON DOWN! to fill up Contestants Row (like Death Row but with prizes) by trying to guess the price of one p
The Pricing Games are the most interesting bit of the show, and there is a surprising amount of variety given that the object of all of them is to guess some prices. The most fun ones are the ones that involve a little bit more than just pricing, such as Hole in One where to win the big prize the player has to putt a golf ball into the hole but for every item she prices correctly she can putt from closer. Every week this comes up there's always a bet with one of the scantily dressed assistants that ol' Brucie won't be able to putt it in, which he never usually does. Also hilariously, the giant cardboard sign has a handle that changes to 'Hole in Two' so that if the player loses they can have another shot.
And then there's Plinko where players drop discs into holes in the hope that they'll fall into a cash pocket, with more discs going to people who guess things correctly.
The game that scared us most when we were younger was Cliffhanger. To win the big prize the player had to price three objects (under £100). For every pound the player was out for each one, the cardboard mountaineer would climb up one notch on the cardboard mountain. If he went past point 25 he would fall off and probably die. Disastrous.
After a pricing game, another audience member would go mad and be invited to Contestants Row and they'd do it all over again. And again. And again, and again and again in the Crowther orientated hour long episodes. When they had the requisite number of contestants, things would happen depending on the version.
In the old Crowther episodes, the six players would play a checkout game to guess the price of several goods from a particular year, with people who were furthest from the correct answer being whittled away until only two were left.
In later Crowther series and in the Warmans/Forsyth sagas, they'd bring on The Wheel, the standard mechanism used on the US show. Each face on the wheel was marked with a number between five and 100 and the players were given up to two spins to get as close to a hundred as possible without going over. If someone managed to get 100 exactly they'd win a bonus prize (although in Warman's episodes they'd need to repeat the feat). The players with the highest scores went forward to the...
Showcase Showdown. Lots of lovely huge prizes were on display and each player left was allowed to pick one of them to take if they won. To win, they had to guess the total value of the whole showcase and whoever was nearest won. Hurrah! in the modern Brucie version, the player gets to randomly pick a value between £1000 to £5000 by pressing a button to stop a flashing light on the Range Finder. If they can get their guess to be within that amount of the actual amount, without going over then they win the whole showcase which was usually between £15-25,000.
